Editing, Revising, Rewriting Checklist:

When editing or rewriting your composition, the following guide may be helpful:

  1. Is each phrase, clause and sentence clear and complete?

  2. Can any wordy, wooden sentences be improved by replacing words, shortening them or even perhaps deleting them?

  3. Can any clipped, abrupt sentences be improved by merging them?

  4. Can any wordy sentences be made more concise?

  5. Are there any repetition or redundancies that need to be removed? One way to reduce the clutter is to do away with repetitious expressions usually referred to as redundancies. We so often read redundancies like 'free gifts' or 'do not hesitate to' we give them scant attention. They are not errors; they are unnecessary.

Does this mean that all repetition must be nullified, or that writers should never repeat themselves? No, it does not. Strategically repeating key words and phrases or clauses can make the intended message clearer and more impactful.

  6. Can any run-on sentences be more effectively unified or repositioned?

  7. Are the pronouns clearly related to the corresponding nouns?

  8. Are verb and subject in agreement?

  9. Are all modifying words and phrases clearly related to the words and phrases they are meant to modify?

  10. Are all verb forms correct and in agreement?

  11. Is the punctuation accurate?

  12. Is the spelling correct?

  13. Does each word help express the message effectively and fittingly?
